Virtual Language Practice

Find some of my favorite sites and ideas to help your child engage in communication.

Storyline Online
Choose from a variety of books that can be read to you and your child. Build comprehension and vocabulary!

Encourage your child to ask you about any vocabulary they do not know.
Ask your child questions before they listen.
Stop the story half way and talk about what you both predict might happen.
Review after the story is over to work on sequencing of events skills- help them using words such as "first", "then", "next"
Ask their opinion related to characters actions or character traits
Older students can be asked to make connections to the story's theme
Older students can be asked to make personal connections to story characters/plot

Epic!-Books
Enjoy a virtual library at your finger tips. Want to research penguins or learn more about a historical figure, then this is your site.

Use this site under my teacher page. Find your initials and start searching this fun virtual library. I can see what you and your student are reading. There are books in Spanish as well! Some books are also read aloud. I like how many of the books let you know the grade or reading level so you can help your child choose easier reads. This a good place to start to find some non-fiction reading.

Ask follow up questions about what they read about
Have your student show you the funniest part of the book
Encourage them to ask you the meanings of new words
Point out images that you see and model how you make a personal connection to these

PLAY!

Playing games with family is underrated. I know that some may think that all we do is get to play games in speech and language but that is not true. At home games can serve so many purposes that are related to language. So dust off your favorite game and think of some of the concepts and ideas listed. You do not even need special materials! I have listed games that require no materials

CONCEPTS TO BE THOUGHTFUL OF
Teach your child about turn taking

Playing board games helps students learn about concepts such as before, after, next, skip a turn/lose a turn, forward, backwords
Games can teach kids about problem solving and strategy use- model your thinking and strategy to WIN a game
Winning and losing are part of life, exposing your student to this is important for pragmatic language
Playing games builds students' understanding to follow directions and rules
Game play involves following a sequence of events as well- help kids make predictions and anticipate what will happen next
