History of Alcott Elementary School
Alcott Elementary School opened in the fall of 1951, initially featuring a kindergarten wing, a nine-room wing for grades one to three, and a multi-purpose room. In 1955, a gymnasium, auditorium, and eleven additional classrooms were added.
Alcott Elementary School is named after Bronson Alcott, the father of Louisa May Alcott, the celebrated author of Little Women.
Bronson Alcott was a prominent educator and transcendentalist philosopher, known for his innovative and progressive ideas on education. He served as the Superintendent of Concord schools in the nineteenth century. His influence, along with the cultural history of Concord, played a role in the community's commitment to education, which is reflected in the school’s mission.
In September 2002, construction began on a new Alcott School building. This project was the culmination of thousands of volunteer hours from space and building committee members. The design process took two years and involved teachers, parents, neighbors, school administrators, budget advisors, environmental experts, architects, and construction firms. The new two-story Alcott School opened in September 2004, featuring beautiful hallways and state-of-the-art classrooms. Today, nearly 100 staff members take pride in inspiring young minds in this modern facility.
