Literacy Support

 

Alcott provides many opportunities for additional literacy support in addition to the regular classroom instruction. Students are recommended to received this extra support by the classroom teacher. Students are placed in small pull out groups based on their need. This support is called RTI (Response to Intervention). Students are monitored closely and the groups are flexible.

Kindergarten

  • RTI - Small groups of students meet 3 times a week for 30 minute pull-out sessions with a literacy support staff member.  The focus is on phonemic awareness, rhyming, letter names and sounds, concepts about print and oral language development.

  • Thursday Afternoon - small groups of students on a rotating basis stay for the afternoon to work with the classroom teacher and classroom aide.

Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3

  • RTI - Small groups of students meet 3 times a week for 30 minute pull out session with a literacy support staff member. The focus of the group is on decoding, fluency, comprehension, and written response to reading.

  • Extended Day Tuesday Enrichment - Small groups of students stay for additional literacy support on Early Release Tuesdays (one hour of literacy and one hour of Math). The focus of the literacy instruction is on decoding, fluency and comprehension.

Grade 4 and Grade 5

  • RTI - Small groups of students meet 2 times a week for 45 minute pull out session with a literacy support staff member. The focus of the group is on decoding, fluency, comprehension, and response to reading (written and using technology).
