January 30, 2017

Dear Alcott Families,

On Wednesday, February 1, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will honor the 2016 Commendation Schools at the State House.  Alcott is one of 49 schools statewide to be recognized for high achievement and high progress (there are 1,930 public school in the state).  Sharon will be there to accept the Commemorative certificate, along with English Language Arts Curriculum Specialist, Jean Thuma and Math Curriculum coordinator, Judy Olson.  Superintendent, Diana Rigby, will also be there for the ceremony.

On Wednesday, January 25, the whole school posed for a picture in the front of the school under the Commendation sign.   This all-school photo will be hung alongside the Commendation certificate in a prominent place in Alcott.  The faculty and staff at Alcott have worked diligently with students to make the gains that made this award possible.  Your ongoing support of all that we do is a significant contributor to our success.  Thank you!

Alcott’s Green Monsters have been working hard, preparing for the Cooler Concord Fair on February 4.   We hope you will help The Monsters by filling out this brief survey (if you haven’t done so already) https://goo.gl/forms/HZpYq8OPAIzHUF56  to help them collect information on how your family is working toward reducing its carbon footprint.  Survey results and a short video created by The Green Monsters will be displayed at the Cooler Concord Fair from 10AM-4PM, at CCHS.  Our school can win up to $1,000 if enough parents attend!  Students from all the schools have been working hard on their exhibits. We hope you will come and see ours!

Jumping ahead to the end of February, we’re looking forward to our annual book fair!  This year, “Best Book Fairs” will be the vendor.  The book fair will start on Monday, February 27 and culminate in the Dr. Seuss Family Night on March 2.  The book fair is the kick-off event for Alcott’s Read-a-thon, which takes place throughout the month of March.  More information about Read-a-thon activities will be forthcoming from your child’s teacher.

Finally, I want to inform you that I will be out of the office from January 31 to February 9.  Judy Olson, Jean Thuma and John Peachey will be in change while I’m away.  METCO Director, Aaron Joncas and Director of Special Education, Jessica Murphy will share responsibility for support in the building as needed.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kathy Codianne
