Curriculum

Fifth Grade at a Glance

This year students will engage in a variety of new content and have the opportunity to dig deeper in areas students have explored in earlier in grades. In Math, students will continue to be flexibly grouped for math while they work through the tested and proven Everyday Math 4 Curriculum.  Students will spend a large portion of fifth grade deepening their understanding of fractions and decimals.  Additionally, Grade 5 students complete Continental Math League and Math Olympiad challenges throughout the school year.  In Reading, students will continue their work with a variety of genres.  Each year we engage in different texts, however there will be multiple points throughout the year where the entire fifth grade is working on the same title.  In Writing, students continue their work with personal narratives, persuasive essays, and feature articles.

Social Studies and Science are team taught, Mr. Gregor and Mrs. Anderson make up one team and Mrs. Luby and Mrs. Wilson make up the second team.  Social Studies is taught by Mr. Gregor and students will focus on North America, from early Native Civilizations, Age of Exploration, Colonization and the American Revolution.  Science is taught by Mrs. Anderson and students will dive into the Moon and Sun, Mixtures and Solutions, Technology and Engineering, and finally Environmental Science and Oceans.
